It involves several hours of psychological evaluation, that is interpreted, written up into a report (if desired), with a feedback session. A psychodiagnostic assessment is intended to determine if they have a diagnosis of any mental health conditions listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Health Disorders. What are they for? Assessments provide an extended and formal investigation into symptoms for the purposes of diagnostic clarity, as well as recommendations for treatment. The resulting diagnosis and recommendations are often the basis of treatment planning. Why would I need one? A person may be referred for a psychodiagnostic assessments by or for school, employment, legal purposes, government/public assistance services. The results of testing may be used to determine eligibility for accommodations or services in any of these domains. A person may refer themselves for assessment if they are concerned they may have a mental health condition that needs to be addressed and want to know exactly what is going on with themselves in terms of their mental health. How long does it take? This varies according to a person's symptom presentation, testing needs (determined by the psychologist), age, and other factors. At a minimum one can expect at least one session for 2-3 hours. A typical psychological assessments occur over the course of 2-3 sessions for about 2 hours each. After the evaluation/testing phase you will have a feedback session and may (or may not depending on needs/preferences) receive a formal report of your psychological assessment results.
